abstract = {We present a taxonomical and phylogenetic study of Puccinia (rust fungi, Uredinales) infecting tribe Lycieae (Solanaceae) based on historical and recent collections. We reconstructed the phylogeny using two distinct fungal barcoding markers (nr internal transcriber spacer ITS and mt cytochrome oxidase subunit 3) and assessed the value of morphological traits and geographic range as important features for discriminating lineages. The morphology of the teliospore pedicels and the rust species? geographic range explained the relationships within this group where two major lineages were distinguished. Four Puccinia species are recognized on Lycieae in the New World lineage and four in the Old World lineage. Puccinia tumidipes from North America is resurrected, P. spinulosa from Madagascar is reduced to a synonym of P. engleriana and P. dimidipes is described from South America. Descriptions and identification key are presented for the accepted species.}
