The origin of the Bouteloua curtipendula complex seems to be recent, so the taxa show low divergence. The main morphological taxonomic characters used to circumscribe species were all found to be homoplasious.}

The Bouteloua curtipendula complex (Gramineae: Chloridoideae) has been treated as a group of 12 species distributed from Canada to Argentina.
