Morphological, karyological, anatomical and ontogenetic studies indicated that this species is taxonomically well-isolated and suggestive of an affinity with the genus Ormosolenia. This relationship was supported through results of UPGMA analysis of 35 morphological characters and phylogenetic analysis of combined morphological and nrDNA ITS sequence data. The latter analysis suggests that Ormosolenia and P. nebrodense are monophyletic sister groups, although with weak branch support. Given its unusual life cycle, distinct suffruticose, evergreen and dwarf habit, peculiar fruit anatomy, and possible isolated position in the phylogenetic tree, we recognize P. nebrodense as distinct from Ormosolenia and treat it as the new monotypic genus Siculosciadium, namely S. nebrodense (Guss.) Abstract
The results of a morphological and molecular systematic investigation of the poorly known Sicilian endemic species Peucedanum nebrodense (Apiaceae subfamily Apioideae) are presented in order to better characterize the species and clarify its taxonomic position. Given its unusual life cycle, distinct suffruticose, evergreen and dwarf habit, peculiar fruit anatomy, and possible isolated position in the phylogenetic tree, we recognize P. nebrodense as distinct from Ormosolenia and treat it as the new monotypic genus Siculosciadium, namely S. nebrodense (Guss.)
