Abstract

Warneckea consists of shrubs and small trees endemic to tropical forests in Africa, Madagascar, and Mauritius. Phylogenetic analyses of sequence data from the transcribed spacers of nuclear ribosomal DNA (ETS, ITS) indicate that section Carnosa Jacq.-F?l. (1 sp., East-Africa and Madagascar) is a divergent element that is best treated at the subgeneric level. Its sister-group is subgenus Warneckea in which the analyses found three major lineages together forming a basal trichotomy. These three lineages represent section Strychnoidea (western and central Africa), section Warneckea (East-Africa, Madagascar, and Mauritius), and a third group with three West-African species (W. fascicularis, W. guineensis, and W. mangrovensis) comprising the newly proposed section Guineensea.
