Abstract

A powdery mildew was found on Castanopsis cuspidata in November 2013. Morphological and molecular analyses revealed that this species is new to science belonging to Erysiphe sect. Californiomyces that mainly distributes in tropical region of Asia. Erysiphe kissiana sp. nov. is the first record of section Californiomyces in Japan. This species has also an affinity to E. gracilis that occurs on evergreen oak in temperate region of East Asia, which suggests that E. kissiana is a missing link between Erysiphe species distributed in tropical and temperate regions.
