Abstract

The Laguna Madre is a hypersaline system located in south Texas; over 40% of its surface area is made up of tidal sandflats containing cyanobacteria. A recent examination of the mat revealed the presence of a boring filamentous form that when grown on agar ?drilled? through the agar. A comparison to the genus Oxynema revealed several differences including clockwise and counter clockwise movement in addition to oscillating movement atypical of any known taxa. The taxon produces three novel toxins including the kulokekahailde 2, malyngamide 1, and dehydro-apratoxin-A. We propose establishment of a new family, genus and species Perforafilum tunnelli based on morphology, and polyphasic genomic analyses.
