Abstract

The Nanfengmiju (Citrus reticulata cv. nanfengmiju), a high-quality local variety from mandarin, is one of the major fruit crops cultivated in Jiangxi province, China. Citrus melanose disease is the major fungal disease of Nanfengmiju. It dramatically reduces the commercial value of citrus production. Diaporthe spp. (synonym Phomopsis spp.) are the causal agents of this disease. Until now, 22 Diaporthe species have been identified on citrus in the world. The identification of Diaporthe species is the basis of the epidemiology, quarantine measure and management of this fungal disease. A melanose disease was found on Nanfengmiju fruit in Jiangxi province of China in 2016. Three isolates from diseased samples were identified as Diaporthe passifloricola based on morphological characterization and multi-locus phylogenetic analyses. The pathogenicity of the three isolates was confirmed on citrus fruit and the same isolates were re-isolated from the diseased inoculated fruit. This is the first report of citrus melanose diseases caused by D. passifloricola in China. The results expand the known host range of D. passifloricola.
