Abstract
The holotype of Thyronectria hyperantarctica (D. Hawksw.) D. Hawksw. & Spooner has been re-examined, re-described and compared with new isolate of Antarctic bryophilous ascomycete. Since the condition of type material was not sufficient for molecular studies, the new isolate from similar area was used to designate an epitype with herbarium material. Phylogenetic analysis of this epitype material revealed its closest relationship with Tilachlidiaceae family. However, it is forming separate lineage within this group. Therefore, a monotypic genus Psychronectria is newly proposed to accommodate the new combination P. hyperantarctica. The characters that distinguish Psychronectria from other morphologically and phylogenetically related genera are discussed.
