In order to reveal the most reliable data set and more fully elucidate the phylogenetic relationships of Chaetosphaeria and its anamorphs, we sequenced a portion of the large nuclear rDNA (LSU rDNA) and the complete ITS region (ITS1, the 5.8S rDNA gene and ITS2) of 23 taxa that represent 8 anamorph genera of Chaetosphaeria and 2 other sexual taxa: Striatosphaeria and Porosphaerella. Four phylogenetic analyses were performed, each based on different data sets. The phylogenies inferred from both ITS and LSU rDNA sequence data showed four main subgroups within the monophyletic Chaetosphaeriaceae. These subgroups correspond to certain morphology of anamorphs and teleomorphs and serve as a background to distinguish Chaetosphaeria species into 2, respectively 4 natural groups of taxa. The 2 sexual and 2 related asexual species currently referred to Chaetosphaeria grouped with taxa of the Hypocreales. The similarity of characters displayed by these species with the true species of Chaetosphaeria is discussed.}

Abstract
The morphology-based classification system of the lignicolous, pyrenomycetous genus Chaetosphaeria (Chaetosphaeriaceae, Sordariales) is compared with results from analyses of molecular data. The taxonomic value of individual characters manifested by teleomorphs and conidial anamorphs is discussed. In order to reveal the most reliable data set and more fully elucidate the phylogenetic relationships of Chaetosphaeria and its anamorphs, we sequenced a portion of the large nuclear rDNA (LSU rDNA) and the complete ITS region (ITS1, the 5.8S rDNA gene and ITS2) of 23 taxa that represent 8 anamorph genera of Chaetosphaeria and 2 other sexual taxa: Striatosphaeria and Porosphaerella. Four phylogenetic analyses were performed, each based on different data sets. These subgroups correspond to certain morphology of anamorphs and teleomorphs and serve as a background to distinguish Chaetosphaeria species into 2, respectively 4 natural groups of taxa. The 2 sexual and 2 related asexual species currently referred to Chaetosphaeria grouped with taxa of the Hypocreales. The similarity of characters displayed by these species with the true species of Chaetosphaeria is discussed.
