Abstract
A new ascomyceteous species Neofabraea illicii was isolated as an endophytic fungus from economically important plant, Illicium verum, in a plantation in southern China. N. illicii morphologically differs from Neofabraea alba, Neofabraea krawtzewii, Neofabraea malicorticis and Neofabraea perennans with its smaller ascospore size, and from Neofabraea eucalypti by its 1-septate ascospore. Phylogenetic analysis of the ITS regions using maximum parsimony and Bayesian methods indicates that N. illicii is distinct.
