Abstract

The Japanese archipelago of Ogasawara presents a unique and endemic fauna and flora, however a large portion of these species, including members of the Kingdom Fungi, are now considered endangered or extinct. During almost 80 years Cyathus badius was included in that statistics and no recollection was occurred until a new expedition to these islands in 2015. Comparisons with the holotype showed consistent morphological features with the new specimen, and phylogenetic analysis based on ribosomal ITS, LSU and concatenated dataset of ITS and LSU placed C. badius in a highly supported clade with C. parvocinereus, C. magnomuralis, C. lignilantanae and C. stercoreus. Because no DNA data was obtained from the type species, is proposed here the epitification of C. badius to designate this new sample as the DNA source for this taxa.
