Abstract

Species of Geosmithia are cosmopolitan, albeit understudied, fungi associated with phloem-feeding bark beetles on various perennial woody hosts. Surveys conducted in eastern USA revealed several Geosmithia isolates from subcortical beetle species had not been characterized previously. Geosmithia isolates recovered from several assayed bark beetles exhibited brownish-colored colonies, a characteristic feature of species in G. pallida species complex (GPSC). Molecular studies based on multiple loci (ITS, TEF-1α, Tub2, and RPB2) resolved their phylogenetic placement within the GPSC. Two new Geosmithia species, G. brunnea and G. proliferans, were here described with morphological illustrations and molecular phylogeny presented.
