Abstract
Recombination in some asexual fungi has been detected by genetic studies, and the reported recombination in the genus Metarhizium usually occurs among the intra-species. In this study, we report a novel Metarhizium species, Metarhizium nostocoideum sp. nov., with determinate synnemata derived from inter-species recombination events. Putative recombinant sequences were identified with the use of SimPlot and RDP program. Recombination events were confirmed by bootscaning, using putative recombinant sequence as a query. Statistical support for the presence of a recombination event was done by the use of GARD program and several algorithms, including RDP, GENECONV, BootScan, MaxChi, Chimaera, SiScan, and 3Seq in Recombination Detection Program version 4.22. The result revealed that the recombination parents were Metacordyceps chlamydosporia and Metacordyceps pseudoatrovirens. The inference of recombination in mitochondrial genes suggests that the combination may through somatic recombination and the Metarhizium nostocoideum sp. nov. was a recombinant.
