This new section is recovered sister to section Lamprocroton in Bayesian and Maximum Likelihood analyses of nuclear ITS and chloroplast trnL-F DNA sequence data. Croton breedlovei, a new lepidote species of section Pedicellatus endemic to Chiapas, Mexico is described. The two Mexican members of section Pedicellatus, C. breedlovei and C. tenuilobus, are not recovered sister to each other in the phylogenetic analyses, possibly indicating two separate dispersal events from South America. This result is corroborated by the morphological evidence given that C. breedlovei is phylogenetically closer to other lepidote species from Brazil than it is to the stellate C. tenuilobus.}

Abstract
Croton section Pedicellatus, with a disjunct distribution in Mexico and South America, is described. This new section is recovered sister to section Lamprocroton in Bayesian and Maximum Likelihood analyses of nuclear ITS and chloroplast trnL-F DNA sequence data. Croton breedlovei, a new lepidote species of section Pedicellatus endemic to Chiapas, Mexico is described. The two Mexican members of section Pedicellatus, C. breedlovei and C. tenuilobus, are not recovered sister to each other in the phylogenetic analyses, possibly indicating two separate dispersal events from South America. This result is corroborated by the morphological evidence given that C. breedlovei is phylogenetically closer to other lepidote species from Brazil than it is to the stellate C. tenuilobus.
