Abstract

Several species of palms (Arecaceae) have high ornamental value in arborization of parks and gardens. Currently, the leaf spot is considered the major pest problems in palm trees, mainly affecting their marketing. The objective of this study was to conduct a molecular and morphological characterization of pestalotioid fungi associated with leaf spot disease of Caryota mitis, Cocos nucifera, Dypsis lutescens, D. madagascariensis, Euterpe edulis, Licuala grandis, Phoenix roebelenii, Ptychosperma elegans, and Wodyetia bifurcata. Seedlings showing symptoms were collected in nurseries in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The fungal isolates were identified molecularly using the internal transcribed spacer (ITS), partial β-tubulin (TUB) and partial translation elongation factor 1-alpha (TEF), along with morphological characterization and pathogenicity. Seven isolates obtained from diseased tissue were identified as new species belonging to the genus Neopestalotiopsis, described in the work as N. arecacearum and N. phoenicis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first worldwide report of the N. foedans and N. surinamensis causing leaf spot in palm trees and the first report of the occurrence of these species in Brazil.
