Abstract
During an extensive survey of marine fungi in coastal marine environments from Portugal, several Penicillium strains were isolated from sea water, macroalgae and driftwood. The most common and abundant species that appeared regularly on the Portuguese coast were P. terrigenum and P. brevicompactum. Phylogenetic analysis based on ITS and partial b-tubulin genes placed one isolate into Penicillium section Ramosa, distinct from all currently known species and closely related to P. tunisiense. Penicillium lusitanicus sp. nov. are proposed here as novel species and we provide detailed descriptions of the morphological characteristics.
