Abstract

Some Festuca species are infected by seed-transmitted Neotyphodium fungi without significant pathogenic symptom. Fungal isolates were obtained from Festuca myuros L. grown in Nanjing. The endophyte infection level was estimated as high as 91.4% in 148 plant samples from different sites, indicating endophyte infection is popular in F. myuros grown in Nanjing. Morphological characteristics of all 11 isolates were identical with each other, and similar with those of Neotyphodium spp.. Phylogenetic analysis based on tefA and tubB loci indicated that this fungal isolates clustered with Neotyphodium sinofestucae, a previous reported species harbored in Festuca parvigluma Steud.. These fungal endophyte from F. myuros in China was then identified as Neotyphodium sinofestucae. Tiny difference in morphological features and close evolutionary relationship in tefA and tubB information were demonstrated between isolates from these 2 different host species. This exhibit a different evolutionary pathways in Neotyphodium spp. and fungal diversity of grass endophytes in Festuca spp..
