abstract = {During a survey of Penicillium spp. occurring in soils from the diverse fynbos region in the Western Cape, South Africa, a number of previously undescribed species were isolated. Three of these are classified in subgenus Biverticillium Dierckx, based on their biverticillate penicilli, acerose phialides and poor growth at reduced water activity. Morphological characters of the new species were compared to known species in subgenus Biverticillium as well as selected Talaromyces species. The ITS and β-tubulin gene regions were used for phylogenetic comparisons, which confirmed the distinct nature of the three fynbos soil species described here as Penicillium chloroloma sp. nov., P. ptychoconidium sp. nov. and P. solicola sp. nov., respectively. Penicillium chloroloma typically produce colonies with a strongly funiculose texture and after prolonged incubation synnemata are observed on CYA. Penicillium ptychoconidium is characterised by its closely appressed conidiophores that produce spirally rough-walled conidia. Penicillium solicola typically struggles to grow on CYA and is distinguished from similar species by its heavily rough-walled spheroidal conidia.}
