In this study and in order to identification of Alternaria species isolated from cabbage leaf spot disease, a previously undescribed species was identified, which is described and illustrated as Alternaria persica sp. nov. This species falls within the Alternaria section Japonica based on morphological characteristics and multigene phylogenetic analyses. The production of mostly solitary, rarely in a chain containing 2-3 conidia, both from the aerial hyphae and hyphae growing on the surface of culture medium; conidia with wide and darkened longitudinal/transverse septa; brownish-black, reticulate/punctate mature conidia and chlamydospore like structures formed from conidiophore cells distinguishes this new species from the two, previously described species in the section Japonica. Pathogenicity tests were done on cabbage leaves under greenhouse conditions and characteristic lesions were formed on inoculated leaves. Re-isolation of the inoculated fungus from the treated leaves confirmed Koch?s postulates. Further studies are needed to determine seed transmission potential of this new species, its effects on seed germination and pathogenicity on other cruciferous crops.} }
