abstract = {A new species of agaricoid Cortinarius associated with Nothofagaceae spp. from New Zealand is described. The new species is morphologically very similar to C. dulciolens but is distinguished from that species by having vivid mauve-violet lamellae when young, reduced verrucose spore ornamentation, a less pronounced plage, and the presence of abundant clamp connections in the epicuticular hyphae. A molecular phylogenetic analysis of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and RNA polymerase second largest subunit (RPB2) found that C. atropileatus is sister to an undescribed sequestrate species, and nested in the section Dulciolentes with C. dulciolens.}
