abstract = {To elucidate the evolution of Hapalopilus and related genera, partial mitochondrial small subunit ribosomal DNAs of 13 species were sequenced and phylogenetically analyzed. Both neighbor-joining and parsimony trees showed that species with polyporic acid have evolved several times and that Hapalopilus, Lopharia, Porostereum and Phanerochaete were all polyphyletic. The main Hapalopilus group consisted of four species of Hapalopilus and Porostereum friesii, while Hapalopilus salmonicolor (= Sarcoporia salmonicolor) came out close to the species of Irpex and Oxyporus and proved to be a distinct taxon.}
