abstract = {Rhizoclosmatium species are commonly isolated from aquatic systems, especially on chitin-containing substrates. This study uses phylogenetic analyses of gene sequences, zoospore ultrastructure, and thallus morphology and development to characterize a selection of strains, which have been classified in this genus based on their morphologies. Analyses of ribosomal genes place the isolates into three major lineages with 89% or greater boot-strap support. Rhizoclosmatium globosum and R. aurantiacum, two of the four species described for this genus, place into distinct lineages but are monophyletic. Based on molecular phylogenetic analyses and thallus morphology of isolates, three new species and one variety are added to the genus Rhizoclosmatium. }
