abstract = {A new disease of rose was noticed in Chiba district of Japan in 1968 and the pathogen was primarily identified as Phytophthora megasperma based on morphological characteristics. Similar Phytophthora species was isolated again from Chiba, Kanagawa and Shizuoka districts, until 2004. P. megasperma is a complex species and some new species have been segregated from this complex species. On the other hand, several isolates were recovered recently from leaf, petiole, runner and crown rot of strawberry in Hokkaido in 2005 and morphologically and phylogenetically considered to be a new species. All the isolates were re-examined based on morphological study and multi-locus phylogenetic analyses including rDNA ITS regions, rDNA LSU, translation elongation factor 1-?, ?-tubulin and coxI genes. In the morphological study, both rose and strawberry isolates showed mostly similar characteristics and significantly differed from P. megasperma sensu stricto and other related Phytophthora species by its external proliferation, characteristic funnel shaped oogonia, predominantly paragynous and intercalary antheridia and fast growth, 10.5 mm/day at the optimum temperature, 28ºC. In the multi-locus phylogenetic tree, they formed distinct monophyletic group in clade 7 with strong bootstrap support, although there are some differences in the position of the rose and strawberry isolates. The results indicate that the rose and strawberry isolates will be the same species consisting of two varieties and designated here as Phytophthora nagaii var. nagaii and P. nagaii var. fragariaefolia.}
