In the latter, excepting S. curtum and S. hylotapetum, S. reflexum probably represents an ancestral grade. Within the S. reflexum complex ITS data are frequently congruent with morphology, but incongruence between these data sets is abundant. According to ITS S. tromsoeense and S. latifolium are polyphyletic, S. altaicum, some specimens of S. oedipodium, and S. curtum S. starkei intermediates cannot be distinguished from S. reflexum, and S. fuegianum is identical with S. glaciale. There is no evidence to suggest that ITS a priori is more reliable than morphology, and we therefore suggest that the abundant incongruent patterns can be referred to a young age of the S. reflexum complex. Incomplete lineage sorting, occasional hybridisation, faster morphological than ITS evolution, and regional differences in extinction rates during the Pleistocene glaciations are suggested as possible explanations for the incongruence revealed, but additional information is required to decide which is/are most important. Three species, S. sichuanicum, S. sinolatifolium, and S. squarrosum, are described as new based on the molecular relationships found and morphology.} }
