Currently, the only described species are Cordyceps locustiphila and C. uleana, however, the type specimens of both taxa have been lost and considerable taxonomic uncertainty exists. To achieve a more comprehensive understanding of the systematics of these species, collections from the Amazon region of Colombia were made and combined with material from Ecuador and Guyana in morphological and molecular studies. Morphological characters (e.g., oblique arrangement of perithecia, shape of perithecia, asci and ascopores, and nature of ascospore fragmentation into partspores) and host association were examined and compared to original descriptions. Phylogenetic analyses were conducted on partial sequences of SSU, LSU, TEF, RPB1and RPB2 nuclear loci. Based on these data and analyses, two new species are proposed including Cordyceps diapheromeriphila, a parasite of Phasmida, and Cordyceps acridophila, a parasite of the super family Acridomorpha (Orthoptera), the latter with a wide distribution in the Amazon. For C. locustiphila a lectotypification and an epitypification are made. Cordyceps locustiphila is host specific with Colpolopha (Acridomorpha: Romaleidae) and its distribution overlaps that of its host. Phylogenetic analyses support all three of these Cordyceps species being members of the Beauveria clade of Cordyceps s.s. (Cordycipitaceae). This relationship and their morphological similarity with known teleomorphs of the clade (e.g., yellow stromata of C. staphynidicola) suggest that the holomorphs of these species may include Beauveria or Beauveria-like anamorphs. The phylogenetic position of these fungi inside the Beauveria clade and their relatively narrow host specificity emphasizes the importance of identifying the natural host taxon with respect to future consideration of strains in biological control of pest locusts.
