abstract = {Pythium aphanidermatum is commonly reported infecting a wide host range (including cactaceae) as angled luffa, bean, eggplant, carrion plant, citrus, corn, cowpea, cucumber, ginger, lettuce, peanut, pepper, scarlet eggplant, sugarcane, and tomato. In the last years, Pythium-induced rot has caused the death of cactus (Nopalea cochenillifera) plants in the Brazilian semi-arid region. In the present study, two Pythium isolates were obtained from N. cochenillifera plants in Santana do Ipanema County, State of Alagoas, Brazil. Based on morphological and molecular data [partial sequences of the regions internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and cytochrome c oxidase subunit 2 (Cox2)], the isolates reported here were identified as P. aphanidermatum. These isolates were pathogenic on cladodes of N. cochenillifera. To our knowledge, this is the first report of P. aphanidermatum causing cladode and foot rots on cactus (N. cochenillifera) worldwide.}
