abstract = {Morphological and molecular phylogenetic studies of true morels (Morchella) in North America, The Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Ecuador and Peru led to the discovery of four undescribed species of Morchella in the Americas. Two new species in the M. elata clade, one from the Dominican Republic, initially distinguished by the informal designations Mel-18 and a second undesignated sister species from Northern Arizona are now recognized. Mel-18 is described as a novel phylogenetically distinct species, M. hispaniolensis. Its previously undesignated sister species from Northern Arizona is described as M. kaibabensis. Two additional new species in the M. esculenta clade, one recently discovered in Peru is described here as M. peruviana and another from the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, and Ecuador, previously known taxon reported as Mes-14, is described as M. gracilis. Additionally, M. vulgaris, (Mes-17), is reported from North America for the first time.}
