Abstract
A hypothesis of cladistic relationships of the genera Roestes and Gilbertolus is proposed based on 48 osteological and myological characters. These two genera are included in the subfamily Roestinae which is supported by seven synapomorphies. The Cynodontinae is proposed as the sister group of the Roestinae and the clade Roestinae + Cynodontinae is demonsrated to form a monophyletic group named the Cynodontidae; four synapomorphies were found to characterize this family. The Acestrorhynchidae (including only Acestrorhynchus) is proposed as the sister group of the Cynodontidae.
