Abstract

Diaporthe (syn. Phomopsis) spp. are well known saprobes, endophytes or pathogens on a range of plants. Several species have wide host ranges and multiple species can sometimes be found colonising the same host. This study describes nine novel Diaporthe spp. isolated from live and/or dead tissue of the broad acre crops sunflower, soybean, mungbean, lupin and maize, and associated weed species, as well as the environmental weed bitou bush (Chrysanthemoides monilifera subsp. rotundata) in eastern Australia. The new taxa are differentiated on the basis of morphology and DNA sequence analyses based on the internal transcribed spacer region, and part of the translation elongation factor 1α and ?-tubulin genes. The possible agronomic significance of weed residues as ?green? and ?brown bridges? in aiding survival of the newly described Diaporthe spp. is discussed.
