abstract = {Commonly known planktonic green algal genus Nephrocytium was in traditional way assumed to have a close relationship with the genus Oocystis and consequently have been included inside the Oocystaceae family. Its classification inside the family differed in some authors, nevertheless, its position inside the family was not questioned. Previous molecular studies assigned Oocystaceae to Trebouxiophyceae and surprisingly some of the former Oocystaceae members - e.g. crescent Nephrochlamys and also Nephrocytium, outside the family, to Chlorophyceae. These studies suggested placement of Nephrocytium inside the order Sphaeropleales with unclear position inside (incertae sedis). Novel placement is in agreement with strong morphological trait - the ultrastructure of the cell wall, which differ of the oocystaceaen multilayered cell wall. Present study aims to get enough data to establish for Nephrocytium separated family and provide new insights to the species concept of genus, including the description of Nephrocytium vierae spec. nova.}
