abstract = {We present a cladistic analysis of 'lower' Hamamelidae as an attempt to clarify phylogenetic relationships among several basal clades of 'higher' dicotyledons. Our results show a well-supported sister-group relationship for Trochodendron and Tetracentron, and these two genera form the sister group to other 'lower' hamamelids. Cercidiphyllum and Myrothamnus are resolved as sister taxa and are themselves placed as the sister taxa of Euptelea and Eucommia. Cercidiphyllum, Myrothamnus, Euptelea, and Eucommia form the sister group to Platanus and Hamamelidaceae. Hamamelidaceae are shown to be monophyletic and form the sister group to Platanus.}
