The sequence of the amplified products were compared with the several Phomopsis ITS sequences obtained from databases. The analysis revealed a diverse origin of the sunflower-isolated strains, which appear to belong to phylogenetically unrelated groups. Noticeably, the strains originally collected in France and in Yugoslavia, where the sunflower stem canker incidence has been reported to be severe, were very similar to each other and clearly differentiated from other Phomopsis clusters. Conversely, the strains isolated in Italy, where the incidence of the disease is low despite to the favorable environmental conditions, showed sequence similarity with other previously established phylogenetic groups.} }
