abstract = {The order Endogonales and its relatives in Mucoromycotina, one of the early divergent lineages of Fungi, include some ectomycorrhizal (EM) fungi. Thus, Endogonales is considered a key taxon for elucidating the evolutionary process of EM associations. Recent studies revealed high diversity of EM lineages of Basidiomycota and Ascomycota, however, EM association of Endogonales and its relatives remains largely unknown. In this study, EM root tips having a unique fungal sheath, with aseptate and highly branching hyphae of variable width, were identified in Quercus acutissima and Q. crispula forests in the temperate zone of Japan. The mycobionts were confirmed as Endogone sp., which were located in the sister clade of E. pisiformis, based on phylogenetic analyses of small and large subunits of the nuclear ribosomal RNA gene and the elongation factor-1α gene. This is the first report of EM of Endogone in natural forests in the Northern Hemisphere, and the first finding on Quercus.}
