Seventeen genera are recognized, including six new genera, three of which described herein. Several genera referred to the Cheirodontinae in previous classifications are placed as incertae sedis characids for the present. Two large internal cheirodontine clades are recognized as tribes: the Cheirodontini, based mostly on secondary sexually dimorphic characters associated with the anal-fin rays and ventral pro current caudal-fin rays of males; and the Compsurini, new tribe, including those inseminating cheirodontines, sharing modified anal-fin hooks and caudal-fin rays and scales. Relationships among the species of the Cheirodontini are explored in depth, with the proposal of four new taxa. The remaining cheirodontine genera - Odontostilbe=Holoshesthes), Aphyocheirodon, Pseudocheirodon, Prodontocharax (=Amblystilbe), and Cheirodontops - are diagnosed in a phylogenetic context, but relationships among them and with the two recognized tribes are weakly supported by ambiguous characters, and these are retained incertae sedis in the Cheirodontinae. The consequences of the use of phylogenetically non-informative and informative characters in previous and present classifications of the Cheirodontinae and Characidae are briefly discussed.} }
