This section comprises pleurotoid species while the other characteristics would place them into other sections of Marasmius. For instance, some specimens would be actually pleurotoid species of section Globulares subsection Sicci. This paper addresses the morphology and phylogeny of some pleurotoid species to determine whether they constitute a monophyletic group within the genus. The phylogenetic analysis was conducted using the ITS region of these species and sequences from other Marasmius species from GenBank, and Crinipellis as outgroup. In the tree, a monophyletic group including M. neosessilis formed a clade that was closely related with section Leveilleani and was distinct from the Globulares clade. The phylogram also revealed that all new species with pleurotoid habit and M. ambiocellularis branched within the Globulares clade, which indicates that they are pleurotoid species within the section Globulares. These results confirmed that the pleurotoid habit is not sufficient to characterize the section Neosessiles and that a new definition considering the insititious stipe and absent pleurocystidia or setae as relevant characteristics is needed to better accommodate the species of this section. Marasmius neosessilis and M. sessiliaffinis were recorded for the first time in Brazil, while M. spaniophyllus was newly recorded in São Paulo State, and M. ambiocellularis, M. auriculiformis, M. conchiformis, M. diminutus, M. linderioides, M. longisetosus and M. sejunctoides are described as new species. Morphological descriptions of the analyzed species with illustrations, taxonomic discussions and an artificial identification are provided.} }
