abstract = {The root-associated fungus LtVB3 was formerly reported as a potential new biocontrol agent of Verticillium yellows in Chinese cabbage and Fusarium wilt of Tomato. According to molecular phylogenetic analysis of the ITS 1-5.8S-ITS 2 rDNA regions and morphological characteristics, LtVB3 was identified as Meliniomyces variabilis, which is a recently described species (formerly called "Variable White Taxon", or VWT). In vitro inoculation experiments showed that the fungus can colonize endophytically the roots of torch azalea and eucalyptus. The hyphae formed typical structures of ericoid mycorrhizas within root epidermal cells of azalea but did not produce any typical ectomycorrhizal structures with or within root cells of eucalyptus. Meliniomyces variabilis are probably diverse in nature but may be preferred to colonize roots of plants belonging to ericaceous plant families.}
