abstract = {The cliff fern family Woodsiaceae experienced frequent taxonomic changes at the familial or generic rank since its establishment. The bulk of its species were placed in Woodsia, while putative segregates such as Cheilanthopsis, Hymenocystis, Physematium, and Protowoodsia were also widely recognized. Phylogenetic relationships among these genera remain unclear because of the morphological diversity and inadequate taxon sampling. Using molecular evidence from four chloroplast DNA markers (atpA, matK, rbcL, and trnL?F), we carried out comprehensive phylogenetic analyses of the Woodsiaceae covering over half the species currently recognized in the family. Three main clades corresponding to Physematium (clade I), Cheilanthopsis-Protowoodsia (clade II), and Woodsia s.s. (clade III), respectively, were recovered. For the sake of monophyly and taxonomic stability, here a broadly defined Woodsia including the other segregates, characterized by the distinctive indument and inferior indusia, is advocated. Combining the ancestral reconstruction of two important morphological characters and the phylogenetic results, we propose a new subgeneric classification to better reflect the morphological variation, geographic distribution pattern, and evolutionary history of the redefined Woodsia. The reduction of chromosome number from 41 to 33, 37, 38 and 39 is largely due to multiple aneuploidy events during the evolutionary history of the cliff ferns.}
