abstract = {Synnemapestaloides rhododendri, the type species of the genus Synnemapestaloides, is a pathogen of Rhododendron brachycarpum. This fungus produces conidia comprising six cells with an appendage at the apical and end, which are generated by annellidic conidiogenous cells on the synnema. These conidial structures are similar to those of the genus Pestaloia. The genus Synnemapestaloides is classified in the family Amphisphaeriaceae solely according to its conidial structure. Here we demonstrate that Synnemapestaloides represents a distinct genus in the family Discosiaceae (Amphisphaeriales) according to the nucleotide sequences of the internal transcribed spacer and -tubulin. The genus and species most closely related to Synnemapestaloides are Seimatosporium and Seim. foliicola, respectively. We conclude therefore that Seim. foliicola should be classified as a paraphyletic genus. These results demonstrate that asexual morphs of Discosiaceae have pycnidial or, acervular conidiomata or synnematal conidiomata.
