abstract = {Species of Coleosporium (Pucciniales) are rust fungi that typically alternate between pines and angiosperms. They cause pine needle rust, and well-known rust diseases on frangipani and species of Asteraceae. Coleosporium asterum, a rust fungus originally described from Japan, has an unresolved taxonomy in North America and may form a species complex. A systematic analysis using two ribosomal DNA gene regions was conducted to determine the relationships among species of Coleosporium, including C. asterum. Two phylogenetically distinct groups of C. asterum were recovered that represent different species in the United States. Coleosporium solidaginis, which was first described on Solidago (Asteraceae) in the southeastern United States, is emended to resolve a part of this complex. The challenges of marker selection for molecular identification and phylogenetic studies of rust fungi are discussed.}
