Abstract
A new species of the genus Blastobotrys was isolated from honey of Melipona scutellaris in Brazil collected in the Atlantic Forest area at the Zoo Botanical Park DoisIrm?os, Recife, Pernambuco state. Sequencing of the large subunit rDNA gene (D1/D2 domains) and physiological characterization revealed its distinct taxonomic position. Three strains formed a distinct clade in D1/D2 LSU rDNA tree being most related to B. attinorum (92 % similarity), B. proliferans (91%) and B. nivea (90%). The strains showed phenotypic properties in common and were distinguished from B. nivea, B. aristata, and B. proliferans. According to these results the name Blastobotrysmeliponaeis proposed for the new species.
